Below are some of the tasks involved in starting a home-based business.

  • Write a business plan.
  • Determine what services or products you want to offer
  • Determine who your customers will be and what kind of customers you want to target.
  • Determine how you will be marketing your business.
  • Determine a space where you will set up your home office. (Or select a business location).
  • Purchase equipment and office supplies: computer, software, printer, desk, computer chair, pens, paper, paper clips, and stapler.
  • Choose a business name.
    • Register your Fictitious Business Name (D.B.A.) If you want to operate your business under a name other than your personal name
    • Verify that the name is not used by someone else.
    • Check if the business name is available as a domain name (e.g. yourname.com) and register the domain name.
  • Get a business license.
  • Get a sales tax number if you're selling products. (check with local authorities)
  • Procedures vary from state to state. Check with local authorities to find out what laws you'll have to comply with. Ask about zoning laws and permit requirements.
  • Get a separate phone line. If you plan on advertising in the Yellow Pages, you may need a business line.
    • Create sales/promotional materials.
    • Design a logo.
    • Design and print business cards to hand to clients.
    • Design flyers or postcards.
    • Write sales letters.
    • Design letterhead (print it from your computer).
    • Design invoices/sales receipts.
  • Order  Yellow Pages advertising and other advertising.
  • Design a web site or have one designed. Select a domain name and hosting company. 
  • Get an email address.
  • Open a business bank account.
  • Spread the word about your business.
